Since the 1982 season ended, one of the constants in college football had been a seemingly perpetual dominance by the Florida schools.

In the last 29 years, Florida, Florida State and Miami took up residence at the top of the college football polls and won nine national championships in that stretch. But that all came to an end this week when, for the first time since December 6, 1982, there were no Florida schools ranked in the AP Top 25.

Florida, Florida State and Miami had gone 472 consecutive weeks with at least one — and usually all three — making the list. This season, Florida State (2-3) was ranked fifth before starting their current three-game losing streak. The Gators (4-2) had gotten as high as number 12 following a 4-0 start before suffering back-to-back losses by a combined total of 58 points to number two Alabama and top-ranked LSU. For Miami (2-3), their season started with lurid allegations of NCAA violations and things haven’t gotten much better from there.

In addition to signaling the end of their respective runs in the AP poll, Saturday also marked just the second time since 1978 that all three schools lost on the same day.
