It’s hard not to envy LL Cool J and Chris O’Donnell (Just hear us out, OK?). Not only do they reap ungodly amounts of cash and fame playing cops & robbers on CBS (Which I know is a network, because Nana Moody says it is), they also get to hang out with Portugese-American goddess Daniela Ruah every day.

Ruah plays Special Agent Kensi Blye on ‘NCIS: Los Angeles’ (which we like to call “that mega-popular show that no one I know watches”). She’s probably the only reason we’ve tuned in to watch the ‘NCIS’ spinoff every now and then. We can’t deny the allure of a tall, tough, sexy leading lady who shoots big ass guns and trashes sports cars.

The lovely 28-year-old actress, who has a distinguishable birthmark in her right eye, was born in Boston but was raised in her parents’ home country of Portugal. After graduating from London Metropolitan University, Ruah became a film and TV star in Portugal, where she won the country’s version of ‘Dancing with the Stars’ in 2005.

Ruah, who speaks Portugese, Spanish and (of course) English, moved to New York to study acting in 2007 and landed the role of Kensi Blye on ‘NCIS: LA’ two years later. The show just wrapped one of its biggest events – a two-part crossover with CBS’ ‘Hawaii Five-0’ revamp.

If you haven’t caught Ruah on the small screen yet, don’t worry, her show isn’t going anywhere. ‘NCIS: LA’ is still one of the TV’s top-rated series. Here’s hoping CBS pulls the trigger on our Special Agent Blye –centered spinoff idea: ‘NCIS: South Beach.’

U2 generated some pretty impressive coin from their massive 360 Tour, performing 110 shows and reportedly grossing over $736 million from June 2009 through July 2011. Bono’s personal net worth is about to get even bigger. The sunglasses-sporting singer made a huge investment in Facebook stock three years ago, and after shares of the social media site go public, Bono is expected to become the richest rocker in the world.

In 2009, Elevation Partners, Bono’s equity company, purchased $90 million in Facebook stock. Friday, May 18 marks the start of Facebook’s initial public offering on the Nasdaq Stock Market; it’s believed that his $90 million investment could soon be valued in excess of $1.5 billion.

If so, then Bono would surpass Beatles legend Paul McCartney as the wealthiest rock ‘n’ roll star. In addition to album sales and touring revenues, McCartney’s income also comes from a broad range of music publishing he’s acquired through the years.

It seems as though Rock ‘N’ Roll Fantasy Camp becomes a bigger attraction by the year, not just for the fans and those willing to shell out for the experience, but for those in the industry willing to serve as instructors.

The annual event, now in its 15th year, will take place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas Oct. 10-14, with KISS’ Gene Simmons, Motley Crue’s Vince Neil, Black Label Society’s Zakk Wylde and ex-Skid Row singer Sebastian Bach leading the way.

Simmons stated of his involvement, “I can’t wait to reveal the secrets of becoming a rock star. Rock ‘N’ Roll Fantasy Camp is a grueling, military-style musical training process. And I’m just the guy to be your sergeant. Now drop and give me twenty.”

Campers of all talents and skill levels will get to learn from Simmons, Neil, Wylde and Bach among others, with the chance to write and record an original song and jam nightly with legendary rockers. Both three-day and five-day packages are available. Check the event website for camp and registration details.

Lamb of God want to spread their music to every inch of the globe if they can, and their latest journey will take them to a place that many American rock bands haven’t been before — the Gaza Strip.

MetalInjection.net reports that the group is taking along an award-winning film production company and will document their trek to one of the most tumultuous areas of the world. The group had already planned on shooting a documentary based on their devoted fanbase, and will include the Gaza Strip show amongst the footage in the film.

According to their website, the idea is to capture how the band’s music has impacted the lives of those who listen to it. They’ve been asking for submissions either in written form in 2,000 words or less or in video form under three minutes the description of the fan’s life and how the music plays into that. One fan will be chosen for each stop on their tour and filmed for the documentary.

As for the Gaza Strip show, the group were thinking this would be a great way to see how in a turbulent world, music brings everyone together. In their request to fans in the area, they state, “If you live near the Gaza Strip and listen to heaven metal music to escape your stressful life, then we are interested in hearing from you! You don’t have to be Lamb of God’s ‘biggest’ fan, but you should have an inspiring life.”

The group will visit Israel between May 27-31 and they ask that those in the area interested in participating to reach out to griffinburkecasting@gmail.com.

This 40-year-old actress was born in Sarasota, Florida where she had a kidney operation at the age of four.

Soon thereafter she moved to Paradise, California with her mother at the age of five. Although her family moved around a lot, she maintained good grades and was a straight A student throughout high school where she graduated as valedictorian.

She was discovered in San Diego by a major modeling agency that sent her to New York to start modeling when she was just 15 years old. Later she returned to Los Angeles where she enrolled in an acting class at the suggestion of her aunt, Carol Merrill, who is known from the 1960’s television show ‘Let’s Make A Deal.’

Her television career during the late 1980’s and early 1990’s included appearances on ‘Saved by the Bell’, ‘Who’s the Boss?’, ‘ALF’, ‘Doogie Howser’, and ‘The Wonder Years’. She has starred opposite Nicholas Cage, Russell Crowe, Mickey Rourke, Robert De Niro and Al Pacino.

Charm City Devils are currently on the ‘Sinners Ball Tour’ in support of their latest album ‘Sins.’ Their version of the folk song ‘Man of Constant Sorrow,’ brought to the masses by the movie “O Brother Where Art Thou,’ is getting plenty of radio airplay.

While the band is on the road, they are keeping the fans entertained with video updates. The second installment of their video road blog, which you can watch below, shows Charm City Devils in Colorado, Idaho and other locations. There is some footage shot from the stage of the band performing live, hanging out after the show, convincing some fans to sing ‘Man of Constant Sorrow’ and more. Boise and a bell are also featured. You’ll have to watch to see what we’re talking about.

Charm City Devils are playing live shows all summer long, including Rocklahoma on May 27. Frontman John Allen talked to Loudwire about some bands he would like to tour with. “Probably Aerosmith or KISS — they’re just legends and two of my favorite bands when I was little. To meet those guys and be able to tour with them would be phenomenal. I look up and respect those two bands so much. I already got to tour with Motley Crue and that was phenomenal. I’m a huge fan of Shinedown, I would love to tour with those guys, we have friends in Theory of a Deadman, I would love to get back out with those guys. Black Stone Cherry, I’m a huge fan of those guys – this last record to me sounds amazing.”

Greg Barris is a staple in New York’s downtown stand-up scene. He’s the creator of Heart Of Darkness — a psychedelic showcase of comedy, live music and science. Yes, science.

When he isn’t traveling with The Heart of Darkness show, he is making music with his band ‘The Wigmaker’s Son.’ Their first release takes listeners “on a magic carpet ride through time waves, anoints Tom Selleck as a baby saving mustachioed saint, puts the reptilian army on notice and forgives all your sins.”

Greg sat down to talk about Magnum PI, Heart of Darkness, wigs and his side job owning a pizza joint.

 

Wigmaker's Son

GuySpeed: How much of your inspiration has come from your family who owns a wig-making business?

Greg Barris: Well, my band is called ‘The Wigmaker’s Son.’

GuySpeed: Right, so how much comedic inspiration came from that line of work? We think it’s kind of a funny thing. You know someone makes wigs but you don’t always think about it like “that’s a family business.”

Greg Barris: My grandfather was a wig maker. My brother’s a wig maker. My dad’s a wig maker. The job itself doesn’t provide much inspiration but there were always a lot of eccentric people coming into the wig shop.

GuySpeed: Were they upset that you didn’t get into the family business?

Greg Barris: Nah, they were really supportive and have always been supportive of anything I’ve done.

GuySpeed: Is it something to fall back on? We all have a fall back plan

Greg Barris: I don’t think so. I don’t know what I would do. I don’t know how to make wigs. My father and grandfather both started when they were kids. It’s too late for me.

GuySpeed: Your bio says that you’re also the co-owner of a pizza place. Maybe that’s Plan B?

Greg Barris: I guess so.

GuySpeed: How did that happen?

Greg Barris: I sorta fell ass-backwards into the pizza world. My grandfather owned a restaurant — the only restaurant on a elevated train on Coney Island — like on the actual elevated part of the train. One day, I was doing a show and was walking back to my friend’s apartment with a case of beer. I was starving, and this pizza place was closing up. I knocked on the window, hoping to get some pizza to go with the beers. The owner and I hit it off. He is showing me around and we go down to the basement. It was a great place to put on a show. So, I started doing a show in the basement of this pizza place for like a year-and-a-half. That was about 8 years ago. Over the course of the last eight years I’ve just become intimately involved and then a part-time owner.  We actually just opened a second location.

GuySpeed: You recently anointed Tom Selleck a “baby-saving mustached saint.”  Is there any way to explain that in a couple words?

Greg Barris : I make these stickers with my friend who’s a band director, Dema Durchin. He’s a very talented artist and one of the stickers that he made a long time ago said, “Tom Selleck saved my baby,” and it had Tom Selleck holding a gun with a baby in his arms. It’s basically just us loving Tom Selleck.

GuySpeed: Explain a little about the Heart of Darkness show

Greg Barris: It’s a variety show that I’ve been doing for like seven or eight years now. It’s sort of a different format than in the past. There’s always a different live band on stage. It’s like three different bands that come together to make this six-piece band and each show is themed. There are always two comics and some musical guests and a guest speaker. We try to theme the show around the speaker and then everyone tries to do something that touches on that theme. I have to pick a band that can play with the comics, so to speak, or the musical guests. The speaker’s usually like a fringe scientist.

GuySpeed: Where did the idea for all this come from?

Greg Barris: Well, it sort of just built on itself over the last several years. I was working on a documentary, years ago, about consciousness and science. I was interviewing a lot of science people and they were so interesting I wanted to bring it to a live show. For example, I recently had a quantum physicist join us on stage. We do like a question and answer thing. The show is always evolving and changing into something else.

GuySpeed: Where do your comedic inspirations come from?

Greg Barris: All over the place really — I love live comedy. I also really like Gene Wilder and Bill Murray.  Also the show ‘Look Around You.’  Ever see that show?

GuySpeed: Describe it and maybe we’ve seen it

Greg Barris: It’s a British show by this guy Peter Serafinowicz, he’s a genius and he made this almost like a weird PBS science show, but it’s absolutely absurd. It’s just very, very absurd and dry. There’s not really another American show like it.

GuySpeed: So, because of your personal tastes, your comedy tends to lean toward funny but also kind of a learning experience?

Greg Barris: Yeah, I try to learn stuff myself and try to fit some sort of learning experience in my shows.

There aren’t a lot of red-haired players in the NBA. That’s one of the reasons Patrick Gonzalez, who has red hair, is a fan of Matt Bonner, a ginger-headed back-up center for his hometown San Antonio Spurs.

So to pay homage to the sharp-shooting bigman, Gonzalez had a rather accurate image of his favorite player shaved into the back of his head.

Since hair is apparently a touchy subject at Woodlake Hills Middle School, his mom Rose Gonzalez actually went to the school to clear the Bonner-cut with the administration before Patrick showed up for class.

But despite this meeting, Patrick was told that he would have to get rid of his unique hair style or face suspension. According to school official Aubrey Chancellor, Rose Gonzalez may have met with the front office about her son’s hair, but permission was never actually granted.

So now it looks like Patrick will have to get rid of his tribute, which has been deemed a “distraction.” He says that he is “mad,” but will comply with the decision.

If anything good were to come out of this misunderstanding, it would be that it might draw more attention to Bonner, who last year posted a couple pretty clever parodies of basketball instructional videos on YouTube. Check them out below.

We the jury find these strippers guilty of dancing to ‘Dr. Feelgood’ one too many times and killing a dude. Both are punishable by the permanent removal of all body glitter.

According to a report made by the El Paso County sheriff’s office, 67-year-old Robert Gene White was last seen alive getting a lap dance from some dancers (big spender!) at the Red Parrot strip club. The manager of the club told police that when it came time for White to pay the dancers he was unresponsive. That trick works?!?

The same report states that employees tried to perform CPR on White, and when that didn’t work, they called emergency responders. He was then transported to a local hospital where it appears he died of natural causes. That was the name of one of the strippers — Natural Causes.

In honor of our fallen brother, we are asking strippers everywhere to dance at half mast on the poll for the rest of the week.

When Staind and Godsmack, two bands hailing from Massachusetts, announced their co-headlining ‘Mass Chaos’ tour run, it was a surprise to see that their home state had been left off of the tour routing. However, the band did manage to hit several New England venues, the closest to home being the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester, N.H. last night (May 16).

Halestorm were playing their last show on the Mass Chaos tour. It’s amazing to see the growth in this band over just the past few years. Having seen them when they were starting out in dingy little clubs, watching Lzzy Hale and her crew take command of a venue of this magnitude was awe-inspiring but let’s face it, with those pipes, she’s primed and ready for the big stage.

Drummer Arejay Hale took the stage first, panning over the crowd with a video camera before taking up shop behind his drum kit. The band has made the most of the tour slot amping up their stage accoutrements to include a flashing logo, lots of LEDs, and a few too many strobes. Halestorm powered through a quick set primarily of tracks from their latest disc ‘‘The Strange Case Of…,’ a disc that has made some history along the way, with Halestorm becoming the first female fronted rock band ever to take the No. 1 spot on the Active Rock charts with ‘Love Bites (So Do I),’ which happened to be their opening number. Lzzy and company will be spending the summer out on the road on their own headlining run; check out all the dates here. The frontwoman took time to thank both Staind and Godsmack for the run saying that they had learned a lot from both bands.

Staind took the stage next. Having seen them many times in the past I’m well aware that they make their live statements mostly through their music with very little shtick in between and this evening was no different. While Aaron Lewis did take a few moments to wax poetic about New Hampshire and his time spent there living on Crystal Lake or partaking in the college party scene, for the most part he powered through their stocked set like a machine, only pausing from time to time to introduce a song.

With a pretty even mix of ballsy rockers and acoustic infused ballads, their set was a bit erratic but it only helped. Instead of playing all of the softer songs in one fell swoop, they were mixed into the set offering up a diverse set and never knowing what would come next. Lewis did pause mid-set to sing his solo tune ‘Country Boy’ saying only, “This is a song about … me.”

The musicianship backing Lewis is one to be noted. Guitarist Mike Mushok, bassist Johnny April and newcomer drummer Sal Giancarelli were precise and on point. The set list was a perfect mix of all the hits with just a taste of their latest self-titled 2011 release. Clearly Staind understand what the people want to hear!

Even though they went on before Godsmack, they still played a headlining set, in fact, when they finished, it almost felt like the show was over, making Godsmack work hard for closing honors. By the time Godsmack hit the stage, the general admission floor was functioning on all cylinders and Sully Erna, Tony Rombola, Shannon Larkin and Robbie Merrill had their work cut out for them. Clearly game for the challenge, they kicked off their set with the hit title track from their 2000 release ‘Awake’ quickly getting the crowd’s attention.

Again, Erna was short on words and let the music do the talking – must be something in that New England water! He did stop briefly to say that they had crafted a meaty set list so they wanted to just get to the music and cut out the talking, and for the remainder of their set they did just that.

The crowd was treated to what’s become a Godsmack tradition in their live set with Sully Erna – master of all musical trades –  hopping behind the kid and engaging in a war of drums with Shannon Larkin, set to the tune of ‘Batalia De Los Tambores’ proving that just about anything can be made into a percussion instrument.

Although Godsmack haven’t released a disc of original tunes since 2010’s ‘The Oracle,’ they did just drop their covers disc ‘Live & Inspired.’ They dug into that playing their version of Joe Walsh’s ‘Rocky Mountain Way.’

Their set flew by and before I knew it they had blasted through classics like ‘The Enemy,’ ‘Cryin’ Like a Bitch,’ ‘Voodoo’ and ‘Whatever.’ You kind of forget how many smash songs Godsmack have had until you hear them play out live right in front of you.

We all know that New Englanders are passionate about their sports and support them win or lose, and homegrown music falls into the same category. Seeing bands like Godsmack and Staind share the stage feels like a little piece of home for anyone who’s watched their careers evolve throughout the past decade. As I suggested to Mushok and Erna during their press conference for this tour, perhaps their next stop should be a Fenway Park show! (P.S. – it should be noted that they offered me a job as their booking agent after I made that suggestion so they clearly share the same passions as their fanbase!)

Disco legend Donna Summer has died after a battle with cancer, TMZ is reporting. She was 63 years old.

Insiders say she wanted to keep the disease quiet, and a friend said that as recently as two weeks ago, Summer seemed okay and was even finishing up work on a new album.

The five-time Grammy winner shot to fame in the 1970s with songs like ‘Love to Love You Baby,’ ‘Hot Stuff’ and ‘Bad Girls,’ and continued her reign on radio airwaves into the ’80s with hits including ‘She Works Hard for the Money’ and ‘This Time I Know It’s for Real.’

Summer was also the first artist to have three consecutive double albums reach No. 1 on the US Billboard chart.

We all know bands and rockstars know how to do some serious partying but sometimes they pay the price for their celebratory antics. Guns N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose apparently learned that this weekend after suffering a significant leg injury.

According to the Russian website Komsomolskaya Pravda, Rose hurt his leg when he fell off of a table while dancing at Premier Lounge in Moscow. Rose and his band were celebrating the start of their 2012 European tour with two shows in Russia’s capital.

The Guns N’ Roses singer tweeted a picture of the severe bruise on his entire leg with a caption saying “Can you say HemaToma?!” Check out the picture to the left.

Rose is said to make a full recovery and Guns N’ Roses are set to play a number of shows in Europe; for the full list of countries and dates, go here.

It’s such a famous scene that if we simply say “Sharon Stone’s ‘Basic Instinct’ moment,” you know exactly which revealing shot I’m referencing. And apparently Nicole Kidman will attempt to top it – if possible – in Lee Daniels’ upcoming drama ‘The Paperboy.’ Want to see for yourself?

Daniels is bringing ‘The Paperboy,’ his follow-up to his Oscar-winning ‘Precious,’ to the Cannes Film Festival this week. It stars Matthew McConaughey as a reporter following up on a story about a death-row inmate (John Cusack) who might be innocent of his crimes. Daniels also cast Zac Efron as McConaughey’s younger brother and Kidman as an imbalanced woman who brings the legal case to the reporter’s attention.

That’s not all she calls attention to. In a scene insiders are referring to as Kidman’s ‘Basic Instinct’ moment, the Oscar winner apparently flashes an unsuspecting viewer, and it’s captured in the first official still shot from the legal drama (via Movies.com).

This is the tip of the iceberg, according to Daniels, who hints at a torrid affair between 44-year-old Kidman and 24-yeal-old Efron (on screen, not in real life), and several scenes of what he calls his crew “getting down.”

Find out exactly what that means when ‘The Paperboy’ reaches theaters later this year, likely in November or December so it can be considered for Oscar contention.

Remember that classic moment in ‘Jersey Shore’ where Snooki got decked in the face by some moron? Well, a copycat crime just occurred at Rockfest in Kansas City, as a Snooki doppleganger got her faced kicked in by a similar moron — only this time, the attacker got the hell beat out of him at the music festival, which was headlined by Slash, Shinedown and Five Finger Death Punch.

One of the cardinal rules of live shows is to never hit a woman. If a dude gets hit in the pit accidentally or on purpose, you shake it off or you settle it one-on-one. The danger of getting hurt at a rock show is one of the adrenaline-fueled reasons why live shows are so exciting and cathartic, but when you hit a girl, all bets are off — a lesson this guy won’t forget anytime soon.

The video starts off with a concertgoer trying to talk some sense into another guy who doesn’t look too happy. Apparently the Snooki clone was the final straw, as her words landed her a brutal boot to the face. Thankfully, this douchebag didn’t get away clean, as a gaggle of burly dudes quickly converged onto the attacker, sending him to the ground and beating the holy hell out of him.

Guys like this thug here serve as complete misrepresentations of how rock and metal fans act at live shows. The moral of the story is — if you’re going to act as a harmful and brutal male stereotype, you’re going to get what you give. A rock crowd is a singular body — if someone falls, you pick them back up, if someone drops their glasses, you give the person space to find them again … but if you go against what is best for your fellow concertgoers, you will be exiled.
