I do not stand among those who think Texas would "do alright" as its own country. I'm even waffling on my past thoughts that the U.S.A. should just shut the world out and take care of itself. It seems far more likely that we are all connected and that we all need each other.

More than 100,000 Texans signed a petition to peacefully secede from the U.S. There are even folks out there who will swear that we never really joined the U.S.

I don't know how these people think we could protect or borders, ports and actually cities. Certainly there are those who aren't happy with the level of protection we're getting now, but imagine NO U.S. military, ships or jets to help out. Also, imagine the costs of putting together an independent Texas military.

Then, who takes care of the highways, who works out trade agreements with other nations, and how many billions would have to be spent to, say, have a Texas embassy in Peru?

The whole idea was ridiculous from the start, and we now have definitive proof of how stupid the idea was. Recent floods in Texas have proven that everyone was must lean on a friend every once in a while. Texas needs real help to overcome the devastation of the recent floods and has reached out to the U.S. government for help.

This was kind of tricky thing, because the government and a lot of the people of Texas haven't been great friends with the government. Still, the current administration has done the right thing (and the classy thing) by promising all the resources we need without digging up these old wounds.

You don't have to like the government or the president. You can remain suspicious and alert of whatever you think he's going to do (even though he's running out of days to do it). Still, now that we need him and the U.S. government, they are there for us. That's why we are part of the UNITED States Of America.
