Deicide‘s Glen Benton was the guest on Full Metal Jackie’s radio show this past weekend. He opened up about the band’s latest album, ‘In the Minds of Evil,’ discussed how his life differs from public perception and more. If you missed Jackie’s show, here’s her full interview with Deicide’s Glen Benton.

It’s Full Metal Jackie bringing you two full hours of metal each and every week. On the show with us this week, we have Glen Benton from Deicide. How are you doing?

Good. How are you?

Thanks so much for being on the show, here to talk about the latest record from Deicide, ‘In The Minds of Evil’ out in stores now. It has a bit of an old school feel to it, kind of a throwback to the first couple of Deicide records. What steered you in that direction?

Well, I think that we settled into a permanent lineup and the writing process now is like the writing process was back in the beginning and we’re all showing up and writing the songs together. Everybody has an input and it shows. And then having Jason Suecof as a Deicide fan and not just somebody trying to pull a check. His quirkiness and the fire under our ass thing … is working for us.

You touched on the lineup earlier. Kevin Quirion has toured with Deicide on and off since 2008, but ‘In the Minds of Evil’ is the first time he’s actually played on a Deicide album. What about this album is a direct result of Kevin being in the studio?

Kevin is an amazing writer and I can pretty much just tell Kevin what I want, as far as the musical approach, and he hit the nail right on the head. And Kevin brings something refreshing — he’s got a heart for this like nobody I’ve ever met in the music business, I mean he’s very motivated and motivates us. He inspires us to do better and is just a pleasure to have around. When you have somebody who’s constantly positive, I mean even in the worst circumstances, the guy throws a positive spin on everything so it’s kind of hard to get in a negative vibe when he’s around.

Controversy has always followed Deicide. Everything from reaction from lyrics and lifestyle to dissension from touring with other bands. What’s the biggest exhilaration from having such a nonconformist attitude?

If I get home alive, that’s the only thing that really matters. Getting home unscathed is my main objective but, unfortunately for me it follows me. I don’t know why. But there has always been a sixth sense for adventure for myself I guess.

Trouble finds you?

I’ve always said my middle name is Trouble… with a capital T.

Glen, being in the public eye can be strange because people assume they know you based on limited information — a partial picture. What is the biggest misconception about Deicide and you? What would surprise people about Glen Benton offstage?

I’m just a regular person, just a stay at home dad. I take care of my 12-year-old, send him off to school in the morning. I grocery shop, I wash laundry, mow the grass, I’m just a regular person … during the day. At night, when the Cross starts showing, then I put my Deicide boots on.

Tell us what can we expect in the upcoming months. What are your plans?

We’re basically right now, taking offers right now and getting ready to start booking the band out. Playing at the Heaven and Hell festival down in Mexico and Costa Rica. And that’s it for now, basically setting up some tours right now. I don’t really want to give away the details because there are going to be some surprises in the future.

Awesome. Glen, we really appreciate you being on the show thanks so much.

Thank you.

This coming weekend, Full Metal Jackie will welcome Dethklok‘s Brendon Small on her show. Full Metal Jackie can be heard on radio stations around the country — for a full list of stations, go to fullmetaljackieradio.com.
