Dean Ween: You Haven’t Seen the Last of Ween

Nearly two months have passed since Aaron Freeman (aka Gene Ween) announced Ween were over and that he had moved on to focus on a solo career, but his former bandmate, guitarist/singer Mickey Melchiondo (aka Dean Ween), still doesn’t believe the split will hold. In fact, he insists it probably won’t be long before Ween are back rocking together again — much sooner than anybody realizes. “I don’t think that you’ve seen the last of Ween,” Melchiondo tells mxdwn.com. ”I wouldn’t be surprised if we played before the year is over to be honest with you.”

“I wouldn’t promise it or guarantee [a reunion],” he continues. “It’s entirely up to Aaron. This is a free country. If he doesn’t want to do it, I don’t want to do it with him. You know what I mean? I’m not gonna force him to do it? But I know that after 28 years [together] as long as the two of us are still alive, there’s a Ween. There was no reason to break it up.”

Melchiondo, who insists Freeman was inspired to announce the split only after finishing a recent stint in rehab, was more than surprised to hear the news. “It was a total shock to me,” he says. “The whole world knew about it before I did.” And after getting past his initial reaction, the guitarist is convinced Ween will one day rise again. The only question left, in his mind, is just what form will it take?

“It might not look the same as it did before,” he says. “We might just go out and it might be the two of us like Simon and Garfunkel sitting there. Whatever it takes to reconnect and make it fun again for us. The most important thing to me is that he’s healthy and that he’s happy doing it.”
