David Lee Roth Addresses Rumors of Van Halen Super Bowl Halftime Show

There have been rumblings that Van Halen might be playing the 2013 Super Bowl halftime show. In a USA Today interview last month, Eddie Van Halen said, “So in November, we’ll hit Japan, and in the new year, we’ll possibly do something special, but I can’t talk about it.”  Could that ‘something special’ be the Super Bowl halftime show?

David Lee Roth addressed that subject in an open letter. He said as of now, the band is not scheduled to play the halftime show at the Super Bowl. “First of all let me say this — be still my pigskin heart. That honor has not been bestowed upon us at this time though it is one we would accept in a NY minute.”

Diamond Dave says if they were asked to play, it would be an honor. “Playing at the Super Bowl is a veritable holy grail of musical recognition, a highly prized rite of passage for (game-changing) artists. Not a spiritual rite with snake pits or Hebrew school or anything, but it’s up there. We are not on Commissioner Goodell’s dance card at this time, but we would be most honored to dance the halftime away in New Orleans.”

Van Halen would fit the profile of recent Super Bowl halftime show entertainment.  They are a veteran band that appeals to a wide demographic.  Those who have performed at the last few Super Bowls include Madonna, Black Eyed Peas, The Who, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty and the Rolling Stones.

The band’s 2012 started off well, with a sold out tour and the release of ‘A Different Kind of Truth.’  But they postponed a bunch of dates, and now have officially canceled them. Van Halen plans on resuming the tour toward the end of the year, and a Super Bowl halftime slot would be a nice way to start 2013.
