Dave Grohl Asked PJ Harvey to Front Nirvana ‘Reunion’

Bringing together the surviving members of Nirvana with a different singer taking over for the late, great Kurt Cobain is a touchy subject, but Dave Grohl reveals he recently came up with the perfect person to fill Kurt’s Converse All-Stars: PJ Harvey. Unfortunately, her schedule wouldn’t allow it.

Grohl tells the NME that he approached the British singer-songwriter about sitting in with him, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear to perform a Nirvana tune at a recent Sound City Players gig in London, but that scheduling problems prevented the historic union.

“Someone came up with the idea of doing a Nirvana song with PJ Harvey,” Grohl tells the mag. “Kurt loved her and we love her and we thought, ‘Yeah, what would we do?’ I said: ‘God, what if we were to do ‘Milk It’ from ‘In Utero’ with Polly singing?’ We all looked at each other like, ‘Woah, that would be amazing…’ and then she couldn’t do it!”

“The thing is, it’s sacred ground,” he adds. “If we were ever to do something like that it would have to be right because you want to pay tribute. There’s a reason Foo Fighters don’t do Nirvana songs, and it’s a good reason.”

While there are very few musicians we would ever even consider filling Cobain’s role, Harvey is an intriguing choice. She must have had something serious going on to turn the offer down — that, or she wasn’t up for the task. Either way, it once again seems a Nirvana “reunion” just isn’t in the cards.
