Fans who missed out on the Wii classic Donkey Kong Country Returns will have another chance to enjoy the game when Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D hits the Nintendo 3DS later this year.

While Thursday's Nintendo event was chock full of great news for 3DS and Wii U owners, the biggest surprise was the announcement of the 3D debut of one of the company's most cherished characters. Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D will be a fully revamped remake of the Wii title from a few years ago.

Though details were sparse on any new inclusions to the 3D version, Nintendo has released a brand-new trailer exclusively on the 3DS eShop today. Whether or not the game will retain the cooperative play present in the Wii version remains to be seen. However, Diddy Kong (the character co-op partners played as on the Wii), is definitely present in the promotional images, so that's a good sign.

While we wait for more specifics, you can check out the latest screenshots below, and let us know what your favorite DK game was in the comments.
