After the death of Prince on Thursday (April 21) the social media tributes from musicians across all genres began to come in. By as we reach Friday (April 22), there are now some musical tributes as well. Two performers from Seattle's rich grunge scene have expressed their nods of admiration in different ways. Above you can hear Chris Cornell performing Prince's "Nothing Compares 2 U," while below Pearl Jam used their Columbia, S.C. show to work in snippets of Prince music, including "Purple Rain."

Cornell has recently been covering the Prince song "Nothing Compares 2 U," which was once taken to the top of the charts by Sinead O'Connor. In a statement, Cornell said the song has always had a timeless relevance for him and takes on even more meaning with the passing of the music legend. His statement can be read below:

Prince’s music is the soundtrack to the soulful and beautiful universe he created, and we have all been privileged to be part of that amazing world.

I performed his song "Nothing Compares 2 U" for the first time a couple months ago. It has a timeless relevance for me and practically everyone I know.

Sadly, now his own lyrics in this song could not be more relevant than at this moment, and I sing them now in reverence as I pay tribute to this unequaled artist who has given all of our lives so much inspiration and made the world so much more interesting.

We will miss you Prince!!!

As for Pearl Jam, there were a few nods to Prince during their Thursday night (April 21) performance at the Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, S.C. According to Alternative Nation, Eddie Vedder addressed the audience, stating, “The shocking news of the day was losing an incredible musician. All of us on this stage can tell you. That guy loved music so damn much. He never stopped playing, never stopped writing, never stopped recording, never stopped creating. He was dripping with songs. They’d go into the shower after he took a shower and there’d be three songs laying there. And of course, I’m talking about Prince. All of us up here were incredible fortunate to see him a number of times over the years."

He added, "Some of us got to meet him a bit. He was an intense cat. If there was anyone I thought would be playing when he was 80, 85, it would be him. So today was a real shock. People know him from the ways he looked, and the different ways he looked, and some of the things he said – a lot of different things to remember him by. You just saw some great guitar playing [onstage by Mike McCready]. But Prince was probably the greatest guitar player we’ve ever seen. He was amazing. He will be missed."

During the band's second encore, they started with their take on Mother Love Bone's "Chloe Dancer / Crown of Thorns" with a bit of Prince's "Purple Rain" thrown in for good measure. And as they said their farewells for the night with set closer "Yellow Ledbetter," a bit of "Purple Rain" guitar playing was worked in there as well, as can be seen in the video below.

Prince was discovered in an elevator at his Paisley Park estate on Thursday (April 21) and emergency workers on hand were unable to revive him. He was 57.
