What could be more American than some football and our military? The Abilene Ruff Riders have been on the road the last 3 weeks but this Memorial Day Monday they will be at home and celebrating our military. Military Appreciation Night will be full of fun, football and give-a-ways.
Abilene is a unique community with our ties to the military and Dyess Air Force Base. We have a great fondness of our military personnel that will be celebrated this weekend at the Abilene Zoo’s, Zoolute to Dyess day. Join in all fun activities Saturday, May 19th.
The other day we posted a homecoming video in which a soldier surprises his two young children, who were throwing out the first pitch at an Arizona Diamondbacks game, by being the mystery catcher. We said it was the best homecoming video we’ve seen in some time.

In an announcement made earlier this month, the US Postal Service told customers that as of May 16, they will no longer ship electronics like iPads, Kindles, smartphones and other devices containing lithium batteries overseas.
This means that people who want to ship electronics to troops serving abroad will have to pay a premium to go through private shipping services.

I had to start this blog out fun because my over the top patriotism might seem a little cheesy at this time. If you haven’t heard, the same Navy team that fed Bin Laden to the fishes dropped into Somalia and rescued two hostages (and killed nine hostage takers) right before the Presidents speech last night. Earlier this week, the Pentagon declared the end of the Iraq War, an almost nine-year conflict which claimed 4,487 American lives and removed Saddam Hussein from power. Now, Americans are are conflicted over whether the entire endeavor was worth it.
President Barack Obama finally made good on his 2008 campaign promise to end the war in Iraq. On Wednesday, the president was at Fort Bragg in North Carolina to welcome troops returning home from Iraq for the last time.
