We may try to forget that ‘The Phantom Menace’ ever happened, but we have always hoped for more of Darth Maul.
Red Fly Studio and LucasArts worked on a Star Wars title which featured Darth Maul as its protagonist, according to a new article in Game Informer (as spotted by Polygon). Inside sources claim that LucasArts gave Red Fly Studio the chance to do a Darth Maul title after the studio developed the Wii version of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2. Apparently, Red Fly doesn’t remember Darth Maul being cut in half by Obi-Wan Kenobi at the end of Episode I based on how he looks in the gameplay footage. Maul does return in the ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars’ animated series with massive, robotic legs, which is based off of a Star Wars Dark Horse comic storyline where Maul returned and tried to kill Obi-Wan on Tatooine between Episodes III and IV.
Based on the footage, Maul seems to be taking on Mandalorian fighters, which hints that this sequence could have been done prior to his below-the-waist amputation. Nevertheless, the title was going to originally come out for PlayStation 3, Wii U, Xbox 360 and PC. Unfortunately, when Disney closed LucasArts last April, development on this Darth Maul title was shutdown under Disney’s own executive Order 66.
