Blizzard Not Optimistic About Growth In The World of Warcraft

In an interview with MCV, lead game designer for World of Warcraft Tom Chilton had some interesting comments about his expectations for the future of Azeroth.

“We really don’t know if it will grow again,” Chilton said. “It is possible, but I wouldn’t say it’s something that we expect. Our goal is to make the most compelling content we can.” He continues by saying that by “building expansions, you are effectively building up barriers to people coming back. But by including the level 90 character with this expansion, it gives people the opportunity to jump right into the new content.”

Well thatwon’t garner much confidence from the general public now, will it? I understand he’s tempering his expectations, as WoW has lost almost half of the 12 million subscribers it saw at its highest peak and regaining that many people will be extremely tough, but you’re not supposed to let the public know that you’re not confident! He may be underestimating the power of nostalgia, and people could come flooding back after they see what Warlords of Draenor brings to the table. Letting players start at 90 doesn’t hurt either, as no one will feel left behind. We’ll know for sure later this year, but maybe Blizzard should show a little more bravado, hm?

World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor launches worldwide on Nov. 13 on PC.
