This Sunday night (June 3), a band with a handful of gold records will salute one of a silver screen great during the 2012 MTV Movie Awards. The Black Keys, who were recently added to the performance lineup, have signed on to play ‘Gold on the Ceiling’ during a special tribute to Johnny Depp.

The actor is this year’s winner of the MTV Generation Award, which salutes his four decades worth of movie making magic. A number of Depp’s films will screen as part of a montage while the band performs its current hit single. The ceremony airs on MTV at 9PM ET/6PM PT live from California’s Gibson Amphitheatre. The 2012 MTV Movie Awards will also feature performances from fun., Wiz Khalifa and the night’s house DJ, Martin Solveig.

While Depp has had his fair share of offbeat films like ‘Ed Wood,’ ‘Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,’ ‘Edward Scissorhands,’ and ‘Benny and Joon,’ the Black Keys appear to be giving him a run for his money. The band just teamed up with movie director Harmony Korine to shoot a bizarre, oddball short film for ‘Gold on the Ceiling.’

After the 2012 MTV Movie Awards, the Black Keys will catch a bit of a breather. They’re not expected to return to the road here in the U.S. until their headlining appearance at the inaugural Firefly Music Festival the weekend of July 20.
