We learned this in our Five Random Facts segment. All Skittles are the same flavor, regardless of what color they are. According to a neuropsychologist name Dr. Donald Katz, we only THINK Skittles are different flavors. Skittles are all actually a generic “fruit flavor”. Our brains expect them to taste different because we associate the colors with different fruits: yellow for lemon, red for cherry, orange for…well, you know what orange is supposed to be.

There’s more, though! Skittles are SCENTED too. So when you bit into a yellow Skittle, your brain sees the color of a lemon, smells the scent of a lemon and you believe you’re eating a lemon flavor.

As to why they don’t just make each on the actual flavor Dr. Katz says, “It’s cheaper to make things smell and look different than it is to make them actually taste different.”

We decided to put this to the test. Can we on the Morning Show tell the flavor of Skittles by taste alone? Find out in this video!
