As we enter the final week of college football’s regular season, we already have a good idea of what the national championship game will look like. Barring a colossal upset in the SEC title game and a whole lot of poll voters changing their minds and moving Oklahoma State up, LSU and Alabama will play a rematch of their earlier overtime game in the BCS National Championship. After the title game, however, there is still a lot of drama to play out with a variety of conference championships, BCS bids and bowl games on the line. Here are all the highlights from this week in the AP Top 25.
As college football’s regular season nears its end, the postseason picture is starting to take shape. Barring a major shakeup in the polls, Alabama punched its ticket to the national title game. The only thing that remains to be seen is if they’ll have another shot at top-ranked LSU. Next week’s conference championship games could shake up the BCS, while the Bedlam rivalry between Oklahoma and Oklahoma State will determine the Big 12 title and a spot in the Fiesta Bowl. Here are all the highlights from this week in the AP Top 25.
For many schools across the country, this is rivalry week: the game that determines bragging rights and, in many cases, a coach’s future employment. But after last week’s chaotic BCS shakeup, a slew of one-loss teams are suddenly back in the national title mix, anxiously hoping for some SEC upsets to give them a shot. Combine that intrigue with a slew of heated rivalries and teams jockeying for conference championships and bowl positions, and it should be another exciting week in college football. Here are all the highlights from this week in the AP Top 25.
Notre Dame’s faint BCS bowl hopes took a big hit this week when it was determined that starting running back Jonas Gray will miss the rest of the season after suffering a torn MCL. Gray was the Fighting Irish’s top-scoring threat, scoring in eight straight games, the longest such streak by a Fighting Irish running back since 1998.
Although Arkansas moved up to #3 in the latest BCS poll, the news was overshadowed Sunday by the tragic death of tight end Garrett Uekman, a redshirt freshman who had played in nine games for the Razorbacks this season.
The day started with Lee Corso letting loose an expletive on ‘College Gameday,’ and things just got crazier from there. The BCS was officially thrown into chaos as three of the nation’s top five teams all went down to defeat. #1 LSU remained in the driver’s seat for the title game with another dominating win, but any number of one-loss schools are now back in the mix for the title game. The biggest beneficiary of this week’s upsets will likely be #6 Arkansas, who could move as high as #3 when the new polls come out and still have to play LSU, meaning the Razorbacks could control their own destiny for a spot in the national championship game (but, oddly, not for the SEC title game).
Here are all the highlights from this week in the Top 25.
Less than 10 days after being fired from a job he held for nearly 46 years, former Penn State coach Joe Paterno revealed Friday he has lung cancer. A statement delivered by son Scott Paterno said the cancer is treatable and doctors expect the coaching legend to make a full recovery.
With the season winding down, things are really starting to get tight for a lot of teams. LSU and Oklahoma State control their own destinies in the national title hunt, but there is still a lot of movement that could occur if one of those two loses. Several teams are still trying to lock up spots in their respective conference championship games while others are just trying to improve their bowl resumes.
We’ve had plenty of upsets in college football this year, and this week has all the signs of some more coming soon. Nine ranked teams, including five of the top 10, are going on the road against teams with .500 or better records and three ranked teams are in action Thursday or Friday night to whet your appetite for another big weekend of college football. Here are all the highlights to look for this week in the AP Top 25.
