School is out and summer has begun for most of us, what we forget is that sometimes school is the only place kids get healthy meals. The Abilene ISD will get their summer feeding program underway Monday, June 4th and continue through August 10th.
Texans we are a proud people and we see ourselves as completely different from the rest of the world. It takes a full day to drive across the state and I'm not talking a day as in 8 hours I'm talking at least 24 hours! We ha
Quilting is an art that is most often passed down through generations although there are many reasons for taking up the craft. We have some wonderful craftsman(women) in Abilene and they will be displaying their works June 1-2 at the Abilene Civic Center.
It’s time to cast your vote in the Republican and Democratic primary election. Early voting will continue through this Friday, May 25th. Ballots can be cast at a number of convenient locations around Abilene.
Barbequing on holidays is a must in my book, especially if the weather is great like it should be this weekend. We all have our favorites that we like to grill, whether it's appetizers, meats, vegetables or desserts. Yes, I said dessert, you can grill that too! Here are a few ideas that might bring a little smile to your guests during this years Memorial Day Weekend parties.
We just had a rare event happen with the annular solar eclipse, coming up in June there will be a similar event with the planet Venus. It’s called the Transit of Venus 2012 and it’s when the planet passes directly between the sun and the earth. Unless you plan on living a very long life this will be the only one you will ever see; the next one won’t be until 2117.
What could be more American than some football and our military? The Abilene Ruff Riders have been on the road the last 3 weeks but this Memorial Day Monday they will be at home and celebrating our military. Military Appreciation Night will be full of fun, football and give-a-ways.
I remember going to the planetarium as a kid and learning about a solar eclipse. The main things I remember is never, ever look directly into the sun and that they are pretty rare events. When you have the chance, make sure you get out and watch it happen. This Sunday, May 20th will be the first annular solar eclipse to be seen in the U.S. in almost 18 years. You won’t see it again until about 2023. The eclipse will only be seen by a lucky few though. Being in West Texas makes Abilene some of those 6.6 million people lucky enough to be in the path of the eclipse. So here’s what you need to know to view this phenomenon.
Everybody has a favorite drink just like they have a favorite car, food, tissue or fabric softener. I personally like Coke, I’ll drink Pepsi if I have to and I’ll drink Dr. Pepper for a little change. However, Coke is my favorite and I drink it for breakfast.
Well it seems there is an official holiday for pack rats. Those people who like to “collect” way too much of one thing or another. I have to say I am one of these people. I collect those plastic cups you get from restaurants, receipts from stores, phone books, clothes, shoes, CD’s, magazines, books well you see where I’m going with this….I’m a pack rat or as they are called these days “hoarder”. Tomorrow is a special day set aside for pack rats.
