The Texas League of Women Voters and our local Abilene Public Library are offering a free ‘Voters Guide’ to help voters make informed decisions. In the statewide race the guide will attempt to have the pertinent information for the primary races. These races include U. S. Senator, Railroad Commissioner, Texas Supreme Court, Civil and Criminal Appeals Courts and State Board of Education.
We were having a discussion today on what different acronyms mean, obviously T.G.I.F is the most popular and for the most part stands for “Thank God It’s Friday”, or “Thank Goodness It’s Friday”. Somebody said it stood for (and I love this one) “Thank God I’m Forgiven”. As the day wears on, I’ve heard more meanings for T.G.I.F. than I have ever heard before.
Wow! Has it been a year already? The Abilene fire fighters and Dyess AFB fire fighters ‘Fill the Boot’ campaign for M.D.A. will take place this weekend May 10th, 11th and 12th, 2012. The two major intersections the fire fighters will be collecting at are: SW Drive and the Winters Freeway and at North 10th and Judge Ely Blvd.
I’m conducting my own, not-so scientific, survey here at the radio station, as to where mom would prefer to go eat this Mother’s Day. It seems that dads are all too willing to make suggestions, but I don’t believe he’s got mom in mind when it comes to his decision.
It's been said of the weather in Abilene, If you don't like it, wait five minutes it'll change. With that said, one question comes to mind, what are the single worst weather days that we've experienced? The Hottest, coldest, rainiest, snowiest, windiest and finally stormiest.
Two Sundays ago, Pastor McQueen at Beltway Baptist Church said in passing, “we need to pray for rain.” This past Sunday I was visiting Wylie Christian Church and Pastor Doug said, “man It’s getting hot, y’all we need to pray for some rain.” Granted, Abilene’s in one of the worst droughts in recent history and we need rain, but is that what we really pray for?
It’s time for the 5th Annual Big Country Homebrewers Association Big Brew Day, this Saturday May 5th from 11am till 5pm. This year the local home-brewers are holding a fundraiser in conjunction with the Big Brew Day.
As Cinco De Mayo approaches, I am wondering, is there an official drink to celebrate the holiday? I know that I will celebrate with some authentic Mexican food like menudo, enchiladas, chips and hot salsa.
About a month and a half ago, I posted a blog about the Abilene city council considering some changes to the city ordinances that would have made owning a dog a bit more costly. In an effort to get a better perspective as to how the people of Abilene feel on these issues, Rescue the Animals, a non-profit proactive animal rights organization founded in Abilene, has just posted a survey on their website. Their intention is to deliver the results to the Mayor and the city council.

The Dallas Cowboys Jason Witten, Cincinnati Bengals receiver Jordan Shipley and the Indianapolis Colts long snapper Justin Snow are the newest co-owners of the new D1 Sports Training Center in Abilene. The Abilene D1 Training facility will be co-owned by a group of investors and sports enthusiasts led by Dr. Dan Munton of Texas Sport & Spine right here in Abilene. The D1 Sports Complex is due to open on June 4th, 2012.
I couldn’t believe it either, my favorite sporting goods store in Abilene is closing it’s doors for good on May 14th, 2012. Store manager Ralph Zamarippa says “we’ve known for some time that Abilene was one of the stores that’s been on the list of stores closing in the Big 5 chain, but we couldn’t say anything”. The San Angelo store will be closing as well according to a visiting manager from the Lubbock store Roy Rocha.
