‘Swing, Swang, Swung’, will be a first for McMurry Universities theater and jazz band departments. Every summer McMurry puts on two dinner theaters, for the second production of the 2012 McMurry summer series ‘Swing, Swang, Swung’ as they call it, will be an evening of music, dining, and dancing in a nightclub setting, featuring a full seven piece jazz band with a female vocalist.
I only thought I knew what the outcome would be on, the ‘What Dr. Seuss Book is More Popular in Abilene? Poll‘. My educated guess was, ‘Cat In The Hat’ or the ‘The Grinch That Stole Christmas’, boy was I ever wrong. Overwhelmingly 34% of Abilene tells us that, ‘Green Eggs And Ham’ it their favorite Dr. Seuss book. Here are the rest of the results.
A group of Abilene area citizens that call themselves ‘Tank Tops & Flip Flops’, will be hosting a fundraiser for a couple of area volunteer fire departments. This year the Potosi and Buffalo Gap V.F.D.’s will be the beneficiaries.
The New Hope Church by Logan’s and Chick Fil A on South Clack, will join over 500 churches nationwide that will be showing the movie ‘Courageous’ this Father’s Day Sunday. Families are invited to attend and everyone is welcomed. ‘Courageous’ sparks numerous Father’s Day activities with many churches planning sermons and classes around the movies theme. New Hope Church is planning an after movie brisket barbeque for all who attend. Check out all the details.
As July 4th nears, many of us will be flying Old Glory high and proud, with that comes the responsibility and respect for our flag. There are laws that govern how and when the Stars and Stripes can be flown. I have noticed that a lot of Abilene businesses fly the American flag all year-round, not just on holidays. Some of our local businesses are in violation of flag laws and lack flag etiquette.
With the Dr. Seuss Festival (a.k.a. The C.A.L.F. Children’s Art and Literacy Festival ) coming up in downtown Abilene Father’s Day weekend, here is your chance to vote for your favorite Dr. Seuss book. Is ‘The Cat In The Hat’ Abilene’s favorite book? Or will it be ‘The Grinch’, ‘The Lorax’, ‘Horton Hears A Who’ or ‘Green Eggs And Ham’? I will be reading ‘Hop On Pop’ Father’s day Sunday, at the Abilene Zoo. So, I ask what is your favorite Dr. Seuss book?
Finding a good, clean, safe place to go swimming has been simplified this year. The YMCA has taken over managing, all the ‘City of Abilene’ swimming pools, so last years lifeguard shortage will not be a problem this year. I’ve managed to assemble a list of awesome pools for you to cool off during the dog days of summer. Enjoy “The Best Places to Go Swimming in Abilene”, and please tell me which pool is your favorite.
As I drive around town I’ve noticed more wild animals either dead on city streets, or just wandering around town. On my commute to and from work, I counted 7 dead ‘wild animals’ on the roads. There was three coyotes, one porcupine, one deer, one raccoon and a deer. Then while I was Broadcasting live on location at a car lot this past Saturday, a skunk (in the middle of the day), casually strolled by not five feet from where we were seated, paused to look at us for minute and then continued on it’s way. I called Abilene Animal Control to find out, ‘why are we seeing so many wild animals in Abilene?’ (CAUTION! Graphic images included)
What do men really want for Father’s day? A new set of golf clubs, a new rifle or shotgun, someone else to do their yard work, cash money, a hot date with the wife, a back and foot massage, a home cooked meal, handmade Father’s Day cards, homemade gifts, a hand written scroll with notes of appreciation, a kid free weekend or how about my dads answer to this age old question, nothing.
The National weather service and our local weathermen all agree, ‘temperatures in Abilene and for the most part Texas, have been extremely mild this winter and spring’. Now that we’re entering into summer, the temperatures have started soaring into triple digits. With that comes the dangers of dehydration, heat exhaustion and in some cases, deadly heat stroke. The later of which nearly happened to me on Memorial Day weekend, when I discovered that I was on the verge of total collapse and could have died.
Saturday June 2nd, there will be a bike run in Buffalo Gap benefiting, ‘Baija’s Promise Ministries’. This fundraising event will help Baija’s Promise fill a warehouse with diapers, thus the name for the bike run, ‘Bikers for Bottoms’. Baija’s Promise Ministries is a nonprofit organization that ministers to young pregnant teens and helps provide them with diapers and other essentials that a young teen mother needs to help raise a child.
Texas is one of the few states that still uses the death penalty. 482 Texas inmates have been put to death in the Lone Star State since 1982. Five more inmates are scheduled to be executed in Texas this year. Men aren’t the only ones on death row, three woman have been executed in Texas since 1998. Proponents of the death penalty claim that ‘having the death penalty deters crime’, does it?. What are your thoughts on the death penalty?
