The ‘John Wayne Film Festival’ (JWFF) is returning to Snyder, Texas for the second year in a row. The festival is set for Labor Day weekend, August 31st through September 2nd. The historic Ritz Theater on the square in Snyder is where you’ll see some of the Duke’s most popular movies on the big screen.
With Car-Walk finally here, I have been seeing so many classic cars on the streets of Abilene. Every time I see a really hot car, one question keeps popping up in my head. The one question that car enthusiasts argue over, time and time again. Heck, it even started several fist fights back in my old Abilene High School days. Are you a Bow-Tie (Chevrolet) , Pony-car (Ford) or Mopar (Dodge/Chrysler/Plymouth) person?
‘Sweet H2O’ is a benefit fund raiser street-dance and concert, that will take place in downtown Sweetwater. The event will feature 11 musicians/bands that are scheduled to appear Saturday July 28th starting at 5 p.m. The music will range from Country to Texas music, Blues, Rock, Folk and Americana. The beneficiary of this event is the Texas Theater in downtown Sweetwater. Did I mention the concert and dance are free?
My wife was given a Kindle by her employer for Christmas 2010. Christmas 2011, her boss gave her a ‘Kindle Fire’, and I was handed down her first one. At first I said “wow, an over grown iPhone for books, great.” I didn’t appreciate this hand me down e-book, until Janis Test with the Abilene Library, told me that I can check-out books with my Kindle and that the library has a ‘Conquer your Kindle’ class that I needed to take. That class is coming up again.
This Saturday July 7th the Roscoe little league baseball field is the location for the annual Plowboy Mud Bog. Felix Pantoja the Mud Bog organizer says, “last year ‘Bug Nasty’ from Hobbs New Mexico and the crowds favorite, seemed to be the only one to make it out of the pit, but this year Bug Nasty has got competition coming from the Texas panhandle. Bug Nasty is returning this year to defend it’s title.” Anyone can come watch or compete, even kids can make the dash for cash.
s the fourth of July nears, there are a lot of celebrations going on in Abilene and the Big Country. First off, there are two neighborhood parades I’m aware of, the Amarillo Street Parade and the Hillcrest neighborhood parade. The later will take place Wednesday July 4th. There are a lot of other Independence Day celebrations going on, here’s a list of what I’ve gathered so far.
The Friday prior to the July fourth holiday, the Abilene Association of Realtors (A.A.R.) always sponsor a blood drive at the Mall of Abilene, just outside of the Premier Cinema 6 theater. This year was no different, as realtors and those in the housing industry turned out to support the blood drive. Last year the A.A.R. collected 31 units of blood and their goal was to exceed that.
Texas’ first bourbon distiller, Dan Garrison was in Abilene this week, drumming up business for his ‘Fine Texas Bourbon Whiskey‘. Being that his distillery in Hye Texas is the first and only, bourbon distillery to be built in the United States since prohibition, I invited him to come on the radio station and share with us how a ‘Fine Bourbon Whiskey’ is made. By the way did I mention that he also brought us a sample of his liquid gold.
There’s a new climbing wall in Abilene and it’s owner will not allow you to use any kind of safety ropes, repelling harness’ or caribiners to scale the 12-foot inverted wall. No repelling this structure, only a 12 foot drop into the pool gets the climbers down. It’s the latest craze in the water aquatics industry and The Lytle Shores Swim Club has one.

Who says that good Samaritans don’t exist? Today a small red Dachshund was being delivered to the Rescue the Animals shelter, when he escaped and ran away, fast (future wienie dog race champion in the making). The Abilene Animal Shelter and Rescue the Animals (R.T.A.) quickly put out an attempt to locate, the little dog was last seen being picked up near the Winters Freeway and North First street. That’s not where the story ends though.
