Remember how, a few years ago, we were all ready to write Matthew McConaughey off? It's hard to believe that we ever thought such a thing. His latest film, 'Dallas Buyers Club,' contains the latest in his string of brave and exciting roles, following up bravura performances in 'Killer Joe,' 'Mud,' 'Bernie' and 'Magic Mike.' The first trailer for the film has arrived and it definitely looks like a film to keep your eye on.
When it was released in 2000, Ang Lee's 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' became an instant critical darling and surprise box office smash, winning fistfuls of Oscars and opening the door for countless other Asian films to open internationally. It only took 13 years, but the sequel will begin shooting in early 2014. Titled 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Destiny,' the long-awaited film will feature the return of several original cast members, including Ziyi Zhang, who is in talks to reprise the role of Jen.
'The Expendables 3' began filming in Bulgaria today, and Lionsgate marked the occasion by sending out a press release that not only confirms most of the crazy ensemble cast but teases a plot that sounds just nutty enough to earn back our attention after the mediocre second film. If you aren't on board the 'Expendables' bandwagon (and we totally wouldn't blame you if you're not), just know that Mel Gibson is playing a character named Conrad Stonebanks. Conrad Stonebanks.
When 'Star Wars: Episode 7' was initially announced, a 2015 release date was attached, leading everyone everywhere to believe that J.J. Abrams' film would arrive in May of that year. And why wouldn't they? All six previous 'Star Wars' films have opened in that month and that month has certainly been kind to the franchise. However, new buzz suggests that while the latest entry in the saga will indeed hit theaters in 2015, it'll break tradition and do so a little later in the year.
Anyone who has been following superhero movies knows that Robert Downey, Jr. has signed on to return as Tony Stark in 'The Avengers 2' and 'The Avengers 3,' but his future as Iron Man beyond that is up in the air. It's unlikely that Downey (who will be 53 when the third 'Avengers' film hits) will occupy the role forever, and Marvel hasn't been shy about recasting the character should the need ever arise.
And that brings us to the weird news bit of the day: Mark Wahlberg wants to takeover the part.
It's been rumored for some time now, but it's now official: the great(ly troubled) Mel Gibson has joined the cast of 'The Expendables 3,' where he'll play the main bad guy. He's also being joined by Antonio Banderas, another fading star who has been rumored to join the film for quite some time.
The last time we saw Indiana Jones, he was encountering aliens and disappointing millions of movie fans all over the world with 'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.' Although we're just now washing the taste of that disastrous production out of our mouths, talk of an 'Indiana Jones 5' has long persisted, and now there may be enough distance for us to actually be a little interested. What does series star Harrison Ford have to say on the matter?
For the past few months, it looked like Steven Spielberg was going to follow up the massive success of 'Lincoln' with 'American Sniper,' a war film about the career of slain Navy SEAL Chris Kyle. Despite plenty of momentum and the starpower of Bradley Cooper in the lead role, Spielberg, along with production company DreamWorks, has dropped the project and vanished to wherever he goes when he needs to decide what movie he wants to direct next.
Despite having a stable of iconic characters that are known throughout the world, Nintendo has stayed pretty clear of the movie business, with the disastrous 'Super Mario Brothers' movie being the video game company's only real Hollywood experience. However, a recently revealed video proves that they haven't been without offers. Did you know that animation company Imagi tried to pitch a Legend of Zelda movie a few years back? We didn't either.
We were already excited to see 'American Hustle' because it's the latest film from the always-interesting David O. Russell and because it has one of the strongest ensembles in recent memory. But now, with the release of two new images, we're really excited to see it because it apparently pulls no punches when it comes to completely '80s-ifying stars Christian Bale, Amy Adams and Bradley Cooper. They look ludicrous...and also kind of awesome.
Once upon a time, we would have turned up our noses at the thought of an impending remake of 'Bloodsport' and said something like, "Is there no originality left in Hollywood these days? A Jean-Claude Van Damme film? Really?" These days, the news of an impending 'Bloodsport' remake can barely get a shrug out of us. But yes, they're remaking 'Bloodsport.'
After a few years of cool, iconic titles like 'The Dark Knight' and 'Man of Steel,' it looks like the upcoming Batman and Superman crossover film is going to be a bit more blunt. Although an official title wasn't revealed at the Warner Bros. Hall H presentation at Comic-Con 2013, screenwriter David S. Goyer was a little more candid at a panel celebrating the 75th anniversary of Superman.
