Can you blame anyone for thinking that Hollywood is cooking up a movie based on the video game Tetris? It may not have a story or any characters, but it’s a recognizable brand name and sometimes, it seems like that’s all that matters. The following trailer is a joke from a group of talented filmmakers, but we worry that a producer or two may see this video and get the wrong idea.
It took four weeks for another film to dethrone ‘The Avengers‘ from the top of the box office, but that dethroning occurred with a whimper, not a battle cry. ‘Men in Black 3‘ arrived on the scene and proved that advance hype and high tracking are abstract concepts that don’t always reflect reality. $55 million isn’t an opening that’ll have executives committing seppuku, but for a film that was expected to open to north of $80 million, it’s a definitely a solid kick in the groin (metaphorically speaking, of course).
Not every actor can be a star, but plenty of them can become one of “those guys.” While we may not know the performer’s name, we certainly recognize their face. We know them from somewhere and that’s enough. Seeing a familiar working actor pop up here and there is just plain comforting. Jane Carroll was a lifelong member of the “those guys” club. She passed away on Tuesday after a lengthy battle with an undisclosed illness. She was 71.
‘Battleship‘ was supposed to be the film that nudged ‘The Avengers‘ out of the number one spot at the box office, but instead you can just go ahead and insert your own “You sank my battleship!” joke here. ‘The Avengers’ didn’t cling to the top spot for the third week in a row, it dominated the top spot for the third week in a row, taking in another $55 million for a grand domestic total of $457 million.
Poor Barnabas Collins never stood a chance. Tim Burton’s ‘Dark Shadows‘ found itself clobbered to death over the weekend courtesy of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, who rode a perfect cocktail of hype and stellar word-of-mouth to an unprecedented second weekend. It’s no longer a question of whether or not ‘The Avengers‘ will be one of the biggest movies of all time, mainly because it already is one of the biggest movies of all time: after only nineteen days, it’s crossed the $1 billion mark. The question we should be pondering now is whether or not it will become the biggest movie of all time.
If there’s one thing Saturday Night Live has been getting right for decades now, it’s commercial parodies. Cheesy cold commercials may be an easy target, but that doesn’t make this sketch starring Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig any less funny.
Will Ferrell returned to Saturday Night Live last night for hosting duties and during his opening monologue, he noted that it was going to be Mother’s Day in twenty minutes. Never one to avoid any possible gag, Ferrell did the appropriate thing: he brought his own mother out on stage.
We knew it was going to make a lot of money. We knew there was a possibility that it would break box office records. What we didn’t know was that ‘The Avengers’ wasn’t just going to break the record for biggest box office opening of all time — it was going to smash it. Obliterate it. Pulverize it. Treat it like the Hulk treats puny human architecture. In three days, ‘The Avengers‘ took in over $200 million at the domestic box office.
Did you know that the comedy duo of Cheech and Chong had a third member of their comedy team who was later cut out of their movies? Thanks to Saturday Night Live, you can now see this long lost footage for the first time ever1
Normally, the Weekend Box Office Report tends to shy away from covering the international box office. However, we’re making an exception this week, mainly because the domestic box office was hopelessly anemic and ‘The Avengers‘ opened everywhere not called the United States and took in an absolutely absurd amount of cash. Between 39 territories, Marvel’s hotly anticipated Superhero Team-Up Extravaganza earned an astonishing $178.4 million, shattering opening records across the globe.
