Remember not too long ago when Dave Mustaine seemed to be offending everyone on the planet with a slew of controversial comments? The legendary Megadeth frontman has been relatively quiet as of late, but we may have just been experiencing the eye of the storm, as Mustaine has once again claimed that President Obama was born in Kenya, Michelle Obama wore a dress that purposely made her look like a Black Widow spider and that the Obama administration has facilitated race wars, class wars, sexual wars and religious wars.
How do you know that you’re part of a subculture that most people don’t ‘get’? One clue may be that the subculture is parodied in a commercial. We do need to give credit where it’s due, however, because FedEx just premiered a pretty entertaining ad where a black metal band needs to find a way to ship their golf clubs.
With the newly digitized release of the Mastodon/Feist split, ‘Feistodon,’ a music video has been created for the track ‘A Commotion.’ Originally recorded by Canadian singer/songwriter Feist, Mastodon created their own interpretation of the track for the original Record Store Day release of the ‘Feistodon’ 7″ vinyl album.
It was announced earlier this year that former Nirvana bandmates Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic would be making sweet music together once again. Although details have remained vague, the nature of the current collaboration is centered around the upcoming documentary on Sound City Studios, where the Nirvana opus ‘Nevermind’ was recorded.
Slayer have been thrash masters for over 30 years. Having released 11 studio albums, the band discovered their sound right away and have been pummeling fans ever since, so it’s no surprise that guitarist Kerry King is promising “the same record we’ve been giving them for the last 20 years.”
In a showing of solidarity for the support of incarcerated Lamb of God vocalist Randy Blythe, American hardcore band Terror have cancelled their upcoming Czech Republic gig. Randy Blythe has been in Czech prison for over a month on questionable manslaughter charges after the death of a fan, who fell into a coma shortly after sustaining a head injury at a 2010 Lamb of God show.
Although the legal process has been a slow and frustrating one for Lamb of God‘s Randy Blythe, things may be starting to look up for the vocalist. According to Czech journalist Jonathan Crane, the Czech media has been biased against Blythe from the beginning and he adds that the person shown being tossed offstage in various YouTube videos may not be the deceased fan. He also states that Blythe’s defense team has a “strong case” to protect the Lamb of God vocalist from receiving a “guilty” verdict.
Killing Joke frontman Jaz Coleman has apparently cut off contact between himself and the rest of his band after writing a bizarre Facebook post on Killing Joke’s official page. Seemingly out of nowhere, Coleman reportedly trashed upcoming tourmates, the Cult and the Mission, while announcing a sudden cancellation of their shows together. Additionally, the rest of Killing Joke have declared Jaz Coleman as ‘missing.’
Thrash legends Testament have just unveiled a new music video for ‘Native Blood’ from their upcoming album ‘Dark Roots of Earth.’ Based heavily on the struggle of Native Americans in modern America, the ‘Native Blood’ video advocates celebrating pride for Native American ancestry, while encouraging them to make their voices heard when facing oppression.
Slipknot vocalist Corey Taylor recently opened up in an interview about continuing the band without beloved bassist and creative mastermind Paul Gray. In the interview, Taylor described the writing of Slipknot’s upcoming album as a healing process, although it has been admittedly difficult to record and perform without the presence of Gray.
Iced Earth guitarist Jon Schaffer has a distinct and very metal look. When a fan pictures Schaffer, they see a black shirt or tank top, a denim or leather vest, a bandana and an angry metal face. In a hilarious doppleganger moment, Volbeat frontman Michael Poulsen joined Iced Earth onstage dressed exactly like Schaffer as the band played their classic namesake track, ‘Iced Earth.’
