The 23rd annual ‘Friends of the Abilene Public Library’ book sale at the Abilene Civic Center is scheduled for June 7-10. The sale includes over one hundred thousand books, videos and cassette tapes, DVDs, CDs, records and more.

If you’re a member of the ‘Friends of the Library’ you’ll get in first during the ‘Friends Only’ preview sale Thursday, June 7. A Friends memberships is only $15.00 and may be purchased at the door. The Public will be admitted starting Friday, June 8.  Prices on most items, including hardbound books, will be $1.75, while most paperbacks will be 75 cents each. Children’s books are sold by the inch, for $1.25.

Last night (May 15th) I was doing a remote at Jaguars Gold Club when something very strange happened with my equipment and my phone that made, not only me, but my co-worker, Frank Pain, wonder about the existence of alien lifeforms or UFO’s.  Do you think they are real? I was doing a live break on air when all of a sudden, I had no reception and could hear myself in my headphones cutting out really bad.  Now, I know that club pretty good and know where I can get the best reception so it was strange that I could hear the radio well, but it was cutting out my voice when I talked on air.

Shortly after that, Pain called me to talk about that particular break but couldn’t get through to me on my phone.  He got some weird robotic like sound when he called me.  When I called him back,  I got some weird noise that, later when we talked about it, ended up being the same noise.  When he called me back a second time, his call went straight to my voice mail.

So, what do you think?  Pretty weird right?

I’ve never been much of a believer of aliens and UFO’s but this was really strange.  I realize that Dyess Air Force Base is close to where I was so there could have been some interference from that.  But, I have done countless remotes at Jags and this is the first time I have ever experienced something like this that was totally unexplainable.

Whether it’s a tornado warning or an Amber alert, your cell phone will also become your personal emergency alert device with the new wireless emergency alert system. So how will this work for you?

Say you’re visiting family in Kansas, and there’s a tornado nearby. Even though you’re from Abilene Texas, your cell-phone will text you, to alert you of the tornado near you wherever you are. Simply put, your phone knows where you are and will warn you of any alerts issued near you.

CTIA-The Wireless Association, the cell phone industry, the Federal Communications Commission and the Federal Emergency Management Agency have worked together in an effort to roll out the Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) system. The system should be fully functional for most cell phone companies by mid June.

WEA system will be available to most major cell phone companies, including: AT&T, Cellcom, Cricket, T-Mobile USA, U.S. Cellular and Verizon Wireless. Sprint Nextel has already begun notifying their customers of service availability. iPhone users will get the WEA system service on the next iPhone update regardless of the carrier.

This new Wireless Emergency Alerts system for your mobile devices will alert only to the following:

• Presidential Alerts – Alerts issued by the President or a designee
• Imminent Threat Alerts – Alerts that include severe man-made or natural disasters, such as hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, etc., where an imminent threat to life or property exists
• AMBER Alerts – Alerts that meet the U.S. Department of Justice’s criteria to help law enforcement search for and locate an abducted child

“Step inside, walk this way. You and me babe, Hey, hey!” For many rock fans, Def Leppard’s classic hit ‘Pour Some Sugar on Me’ instantly transports them to a place in time where the hair was big, the jeans were ripped, and Aqua Net was a prerequisite to any night out, regardless of your gender.

Decades later, the tune is being reinvented for the film adaptation of the successful Broadway musical ‘Rock of Ages.’ The film, with an all star cast including Julianne Hough, Russell Brand, Alec Baldwin and Catherine Zeta Jones, tells the story of a “small town girl” who meets her “city boy” on the Sunset Strip while pursuing their dreams.

The sticky sweet rendition of the song is served up courtesy of ‘Jerry Maguire’ himself – Tom Cruise, and is likely to raise a few eyebrows from the purists out there. Even though Joe Elliott and Def Leppard refute that they were ever really a hair band, it’s hard to imagine the genre without their generous contributions and they will always go down in history as one of the best at crafting addictive, over-the-top rock choruses.

While it’s commendable that Cruise opted to sing the vocals as the role of Stacee Jaxx, lead singer of the faux rock band Arsenal, he’s probably going to take a little heat for this one. He may look the part with his fake tattoos and hair extensions but the actual vocals are a bit too Broadway and sound more like he’s singing a show tune than a rock anthem. Realizing that the root of ‘Rock of Ages’ is Broadway makes the line a little blurred but if you’re firmly planted on the rock side of things, this song is going to sound more like an elevator soundtrack than a rock classic usually delivered with imperfections and reckless abandon.

On the plus side of things, one of the charms of Def Leppard’s ‘Pour Some Sugar on Me’ was never knowing quite exactly what Joe Elliott was crooning through the chorus, allowing the listen to easily make up their own lyrics and sing along. With Cruise’s slick delivery and polished production, the lyrics are crystal clear which will likely leave a few of you saying, “Oh so those are the words?” as you follow along with the bouncing ball some twenty years later.

Mississippi rockers Saving Abel are back on the scene with a new record deal and an upcoming album. Listen to an exclusive premiere of the disc’s first single, the title track ‘Bringing Down the Giant,’ right here at Loudwire.

The album ‘Bringing Down the Giant’ will be released July 17 via eOne Music. Singer Jared Weeks says, “I’m so excited and proud to announce that we have signed to eOne. Thanks to them the world will get to hear this amazing collection of songs. We have taken the last year to write and record the best songs of our career.”

‘Bringing Down the Giant’ is the follow-up to 2010′s ‘Miss America,’ which spawned such favorites as ‘Stupid Girl (Only in Hollywood),’ ‘The Sex is Good’ and the title track. Saving Abel also scored big with their 2008 self-titled debut, which featured such hits as ‘Addicted’ and ’18 Days.’ The band has used their popularity to tour the world and play several USO shows for American troops.

Saving Abel will hit the pavement hard to support their latest effort. The band launches a tour May 27 in Loves Park, Ill., at the Rockford Speedway. The jaunt continues through the end of July.
