We were confused when we saw the Assassin's Creed Unity trailer featuring Arno rescuing a redheaded Templar from the Guillotine. Now, we get to learn about who this lady is and why she's important.

Game Informer reports that Elise De LaSerre is the ginger Templar we saw in the latest Assassin's Creed Unity trailer. She was rescued when she was about to be executed, and ended up fighting back-to-back with Arno against her assailants. We have learned that she is a childhood friend of Arno and fell in love with him when they were younger. The two lost touch, but are reunited after Elise's father, who helped raise Arno, was murdered. What Arno didn't know was that her family was part of the Templar order.

“This is something we’ve wanted to do for a very long time,” said Alex Amancio, creative director of Unity. “We felt that with this generation it was a good opportunity to crank it up a notch and have a story that’s a bit more serious and more mature. Love stories are always a hard thing in video games because ultimately they can very easily become a tangent. By making Elise a Templar and making that part of the core, it’s part of the actual struggle of the character. It prevents it from becoming a B-plot or a tangent.”

Apparently, Elise's father was killed by another Templar from within the order. She wants to know who killed her father and why, and these clues stem from the person who took her father's place in the Templar chain of command. Unfortunately, Amancio confirmed that Elise will not be playable in the game, but will be a major part of Unity's story.

Assassin's Creed Rogue launches on Nov. 11 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
