Apple Changes Age Rating For NRA: Practice Range

After feeling the pressure from NY Sen. Chuck Schumer and other NY politicians yesterday, Apple changed the age limit for the National Rifle Association’s controversial target-shooting game NRA: Practice Range. The free app was originally rated 4+ and deemed suitable for children 4 years and up, but is now rated 12+ for children 12 and up.

NRA: Practice Range was released one month and one day after the Newtown shootings and has come under fire by many politicians and media pundits who decry it as insensitive.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg had some choice words for CBS News:

It is the height of hypocrisy. If you remember the head of the NRA’s speech on television, he blamed violent children’s games for causing things like the terrible tragedy in Connecticut. One month and one day or maybe one month to the day, the NRA comes up with its own violent app. I don’t know what else to say. I don’t know how to describe it. The PR, the stupidity of doing it, is just mind-boggling.

The move by Apple comes just before President Obama’s announcement today, proposing strict new gun regulations, in addition to NY State’s passing of strict new gun laws. Perhaps this is why developer MEDL Mobile has remained quiet on their blog, choosing not to engage with this highly controversial issue.

What do you think about all this? Have you tried out the NRA’s new app? Is it really worth all of the attention? Let us know in the comments.
