Activision Ready to Rumble to Reclaim Sales Record from GTA 5

Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto 5 destroyed the previous record for biggest entertainment launch, surpassing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Black Ops sales with ease. But that doesn’t mean Activision is willing to give up the crown that easily.

The success of Grand Theft Auto 5 didn’t really catch anyone by surprise. As one of the most anticipated games of the past five years, that it was able to blow past $800 million on day one, with the $1 billion mark surpassed not long after. Of course, the previous sales kings over at Activision may not have been so thrilled. They had not one, but two different games eclipsed by GTA 5 in the span of just a few days.

“Congratulations to the team at Rockstar for their success,”  Activision’s UK senior brand manager Kevin Flynn told MCV. “We look forward to getting the record back before the next GTA title.” Considering there’s a new Call of Duty game released every year, Activision’s chances seem fairly strong. However, sales for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 weren’t quite up to snuff compared to the previous entries. Call of Duty: Ghosts pre-orders are tracking below expectations, but with the launch of next-gen consoles, there’s a chance there might just be too much Call of Duty on the slate for 2013.
