The Abilene Public Library is set to finish out the last days of summer vacation, with a host of fun and involving activities. August may well be the hottest month  of the year , but there’s no reason to be bored and hot. Check out the lineup of events at out local libraries.

First, let me start off by saying, when I was a teen and looking for something to do in the hot summer months, the library was always the coolest place to hang out from time to time. I just don’t recall the public libraries of my day ever having any planned activities or events as today’s libraries do. Okay, that’s off my chest now, on to the good stuff, here is what’s going on at our public libraries.

Thursday, August 2nd at 6:30 p.m. it’s Melon Mania at the  South Branch

Ripe, juicy watermelons are one of the best things about summer. This fun family event will have stories, songs, games, and some summer sweet watermelons to taste, the best part is this event is free and will be held at the Abilene Library South Branch location.

Monday, August 6th at 6:30 p.m. it’s Bottle Time Holders at the Main Library

During the heat of summer here in West Texas the key to survival is ‘water’. Many times you hear us on the radio reminding everyone how to avoid a ‘heat-stroke mishap’ by staying hydrated. Now you can do it in style with a hands-free water bottle holder that fits most any 16 – to 20-ounce water bottles. The main library location downtown supplies the materials. This program is targeted for children ages 8 to 15 again this program is free.

Thursday, August 9th at 3 p.m. it’s Wii Games Time at the Mockingbird Branch

Tired of playing video games by yourself? Then take your skills to the next level by challenging your friends on a Wii game system at the library. Whether its sports like baseball, football or bowling or test your driving skills on Mario cart or show off your skills in a dance, dance off.  There will be no registration fee as this event is free to teens at the Mockingbird Branch location.

Monday, August 20th at 6:30 p.m. it’s Pete the Cat at the Mockingbird Branch

Pete the Cat is back, as he check’s out his new school shoes and all the other neat things about going back to school. Pete the Cat’s got fun and music. Pete’s even got his own song too. This event has songs, games, crafts and so much more for grade school aged kids. This family friendly event is free and hosted at the Mockingbird Branch location.

Thursday, August 23rd at 4 p.m. it’s T-Shirt Design at the  Mockingbird Branch

Bring a colored t-shirt to the library and they will teach you how to turn it into a work of art! Your t-shirrt will be a ‘one of a kind master piece’. This creative activity is designed for kids ages 8 to 12. This is a free activity but the child will need to bring a colored t-shirt to the Mockingbird Branch location.

Thursday, August 30th at 6:30 p.m. it’s Recycled Notebooks at the Main Library

Get green with a little assistance from your Abilene public library. Create your own personalized, recycled notebook from recycled boxes, then decorate it with beads, markers and any other items that will help make it your very own custom ‘Recycled Notebook’. The library will supply everything that you’ll need for this free activity, to be held at the main library location downtown.
