It's no secret that we have some dangerous intersections here in Abilene and it seems three of them rank in the top 279 of Texas.

Houston attorney Bill White put together a list of the most dangerous intersections in Texas and you can probably guess which Abilene intersections made the list.

Basically, they wanted to see which intersections had the most accidents so they gathered information from Texas Department of Transportation.

They defined an accident/crash:

...in which the first harmful event both:

  • occurs on an approach to or exit from an intersection, and
  • results from an activity, behavior or control related to the movement of traffic units through the intersection.

This definition includes intersections of freeways (and their subsequent on-ramps off-ramps and service streets), major thoroughfares and country roads. [Attorney Brian White]

With all the fancy data they were privy to, they identified 279 intersections in which there were at least 48 traffic accidents between 2012-2015.

To make this list even more appetizing, they included a "danger score" which was calculated from crashes, injuries, and fatalities.

So, the three Abilene intersections that made the list (with danger score in parenthesis) are:

  • Buffalo Gap Road & South Clack Street (164)
  • Buffalo Gap Road & South Danville Drive (123)
  • South Danville Drive & Southwest Drive (105)

The higher the danger score, the more dangerous the intersection. While those intersections seem dangerous to us, they pale in comparison to the rest of the list.

The top 10 most dangerous intersections in Texas were all in Houston and San Antonio. That doesn't surprise me at all. Growing up in Houston, I was taught that if you could drive there then you could drive anywhere.
