Abilene Animal Services is offering a series of educational classes on pet care through the Abilene Public Library this week. They are also offering a free flea and tick dip and spray for your dogs/cats at ACCO Feed. Check out all the details after the jump.

Updated (July 22nd):

With the current rains and the huge turn out for the first dog dip, Animal Services has announced a second chance to have your dog(s) dipped for fleas and ticks absolutely FREE. This Wednesday, July 24th from 2 pm – 4 pm at ACCO Farm and Ranch Center at 249 E.S. 11th. This time you will also be able to have your cats sprayed for fleas and ticks; just make sure they are in a pet carrier.

Flea & Tick Dip (original post July 8th):

Animal Services announced today that free tick and flea dips are available for dogs this Wednesday, July 10 from 2 p.m. through 4:00 p.m. at the ACCO Farm and Ranch Center. Come to the facilities east parking lot and contact one of the employees for assistance with the dipping. The service is for dogs over 6 months old only; however you can learn about how to treat cats/kittens.

“With the recent rains, we’re seeing more animals in the community with fleas and ticks,” Animal Services Manager Aaron Vannoy explained. “By offering the flea and tick dips at ACCO Farm and Ranch Center, we are providing an opportunity for dog owners to bring their pets in and help rid them of these potentially disease-carrying pests.”

The flea and tick dips are designed to kill any ticks and fleas on the pet at the time of the dip. However, owners will also need to treat the yard and any other areas the pet may come in contact with. A pesticide dip and a non-pesticide dip will be offered.

Educational Classes:

Animal Services will also be offering education classes the week of July 8-13 at the Main Library Branch and the Mockingbird Branch. They will be teaching citizens about Rabies, Bite Prevention for adults and children, Proper Pet Care and the importance of Spay/Neuter for our companion pets. Animal Services has worked with several local businesses to offer free City of Abilene pet license, multiple door prizes and low cost spay neuter vouchers for those wanting to spay and neuter their pets.

Some of the door prizes are restaurant coupons, pet food, pet services at local vet clinics, microchips, rabies vaccination and a free spay/neuter voucher to a lucky participant.
